April 29 Observatory Open House / Lecture /Public Star Night
The Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night on Saturday, April 29th, 7 PM. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.
Our honorary EVAS member and speaker for the evening will be John Ensworth and he will be presenting the starting material he has assembled for an introduction to astronomy course that would run for a full semester in college. He will begin with the basics and requests you bring questions. Audience questions and interest will dictate how much is covered. Expected run time: an hour or a bit more. It is an introductory course; there are no prerequisites and no prior knowledge of mathematics or astronomy necessary. There is no cost to this course, but no credit hours will be awarded either. For more on his talk visit the website at: AngelsAbove.org.
John Ensworth is currently the Principle Investigator of the NASA SMD Independent Education Product Review at the IGES (www.strategies.org). His position is the one responsible for conducting these reviews and helping with NASA education and outreach efforts. In the 90’s Mr. Ensworth was a masters’ student and a PhD candidate in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He earned undergraduate degrees in physics and astronomy, and geography and meteorology with an emphasis in math and computer science.
More recently, he’s run more than 60 astronomy nights for Arizona, Oklahoma, Virginia and Colorado residents. He served an internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in the year 2000 and is a volunteer at the Little Thompson Observatory in Berthoud, Colorado. He teaches math and science courses at the University of Phoenix, Grand Canyon University, and Mid- American Christian University. You can view a Webcam of his backyard observatory (Cherrywood Observatory) in Longmont,
